Women in IT: How we motivate young girls to fall for code

They say the tech world needs more women. And yet, women remain underrepresented in tech overall. Why? The stats are dismal. Half of the population is made up of women, but only 20% – 25% of women hold tech & computing jobs. And did you know that mere 12% of engineers at Silicon Valley startups are women? *
How to support women in tech then?

  1. Don’t ignore the International day of women in IT (every 4th Thursday in April), embrace it.
  2. Get in touch with the recognized initiative with a clear mission to motivate girls to pursue their careers in technology at early ages.
  3. Get involved in a conversation with young (we’re talking high school young) girls that have expressed interest in technology or science, give them credence to your expertise (if you have some:)), and introduce them to fun, brighter and creative ways to get familiar with code.

Checked, checked, checked.

At Resco, we support women in IT. On the International women in IT day, we took part in a renowned project called Girls Day, organized by AjTyvIT. This one-day event is not only an opportunity for teen girls to get closer to programming, but also a unique chance to see how successful IT companies look and work in real life.

“Every year, we look forward to welcome these girls at our office – not just to educate them. Each time, we prepare a couple of interactive games where they can get a basic idea about “the coding world” or about the life at an IT company. It was a pleasure for us to share our experience and answer all the questions girls would have in “ask us anything” conversation.” – Lucia Pavlikova, Software developer

We received a tremendous feedback about the Girls Day ’19 at Resco – an event bringing a combination of well-planned agenda with superb presentations and workshops, meaningful and honest conversations – all wrapped in a friendly atmosphere.
As more aspects are becoming powered by technology, we believe that young girls we hosted will contribute their voices to the field of technology – whatever they may be.

At this day, we got inspired with Google’s Made with Code or If this then that (IFTTT) app.
