1. What is Pocket Radio not for?
- Pocket Radio is not an AM/FM receiver. It can connect to online streaming stations only.
- Pocket Radio does not support Real Audio (RA), Windows Media Audio (WMA) and in many cases Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) streams.
- Pocket Radio cannot connect to streams with authentification.
2. So what is a good station?
- Any station that uses MP3 or Ogg Vorbis format and is not protected by authentification
(username & password) is a good one. We partially support AAC, but not all AAC streams can be
decoded correctly.
3. I've got a good station. How can I import it?
Many of you wanted to know how to add your favourite radio stations. I will try to show you how to do it on a few examples:
Example #1
- 1. Navigate to www.shoutcast.com.
- 2. Find a station using either the search function or by browsing categories.
- 3. Every station has a "Tune In!" button next to it. Right-click the button and choose "Save target as...".
- 4. Save the "shoutcast-playlist.pls" file and get it to "My Documents" folder on your Smartphone device. You can do it by ActiveSync's "Explore" function.
- 5. Run Pocket Radio on the Smartphone. Navigate to Tools->Open->New->Import.
- 6. Type path to the "shoutcast-playlist.pls" file ("\My Documents\shoutcast-playlist.pls").
- 7. Use Done to close the "Import radio" window. New radio station will be added to the "My Radios" category.
Example #2
- 1. Navigate to www.sky.fm.
- 2. Every station has three logos next to it. Pocket Radio fully supports only MP3 format, so we don't care about the latter ones:
- Nullsoft WinAmp (MP3) -

- Microsoft Windows Media Audio (WMA) -

- Advanced Audio Coding (AAC) -

- 3. Next to the
icon, you can see two buttons:
- 96 kbps (high bandwidth) stream -

- 24 kbps (low bandwidth) stream -

Right-click one of the buttons and choose "Save target as...".
- 4. Save the "*.pls" file and get it to "My Documents" folder on your Smartphone device. You can do it by ActiveSync's "Explore" function.
- 5. Run Pocket Radio on the Smartphone. Navigate to Tools->Open->New->Import.
- 6. Type path to the "*.pls" file ("\My Documents\*.pls").
- 7. Use Done to close the "Import radio" window. New radio station will be added to the "My Radios" category.
Example #3
- 1. Navigate to www.smoothjazz.com.
- 2. There is combo box labeled as "LISTEN TO RADIO" on the main page. Click it to pull down the menu with
available streams.
- 3. Choose "128k MP3" (high bandwidth) or "32k MP3 Dial-up" (low bandwidth). File download should begin now.
4. I am a guru and want to manually enter URL!
If you know what a stream, format, playlist and URL is, you can add a new station like this:
- 1. Run Pocket Radio on the Smartphone. Go to Tools->Open->New->New Radio.
- 2. Fill out the edit boxes except URL. Let's choose "Electronic" category and type "Sample Radio" as the title.
- 3. The only URLs that are acceptable are those with MP3 or Ogg Vorbis format. It means URLs to HTML, PLS, M3U,
ASX, RA, ... will not be accepted and Pocket Radio will say that "There is no decoder for this format". One way how
to get a good URL is to manually open a PLS or M3U file with a file viewer (notepad). PLS or M3U file is just a list of
URLs.
- 4. Now a new radio station has been created with one stream. Some stations have two or more streams to provide good
quality for various bandwidths. So if you would like to add next stream to the "Sample Radio" station, open "Electronic"
category and select "Sample Radio".
- 5. Choose "Menu->New stream" from the menu and fill the boxes just like you did for the first stream.
