Common problems (FAQ)

Installation

Do I have a Windows Mobile Pocket PC, a Symbian or a iPhone handset?

If you don't know which platform you have:

  • The instruction manual which you got with your device should tell you if your device is Windows Mobile Pocket PC, iPhone, Symbian, Symbian Series 60 etc.

Pocket PC (Windows Mobile)

Is the product compatible with my PDA?

These devices are manufactured by companies such as HTC (Touch), HP (iPaq), Fujitsu-Siemens , Acer, Asus  etc..

Which install package is for me?

Here are the most common types of the install packages. Select the one that is best suited for your desktop computer.

  • .cab file represents the Windows Mobile application itself and can be installed only on PDA computer.
  • .exe files and Zip archive can be used only on Windows computer.

Note that while Resco provides several installers, some resellers allow to list just one of them. In any case you can find alternative installers on the product web page.

Symbian

Is the product compatible with my handset?

Currently two Symbian platforms are supported: Series60 and UIQ.
It is not possible to install the product to an unsupported device — the installer will refuse it.
If you don't know whether your handset is supported, check these links:

There might be some incompatibility issues with the newest devices. In that case contact please our Symbian support.

How can I install your product onto my handset?

Software for Symbian OS phones is normally supplied using a Symbian installation file (with a .sis extension).
Hence, the first step is to download the SIS file e.g. from our web.

The SIS file contains the components needed to get the product installed and ready to run.
The ways to install a SIS file onto your handset are as follows:

  • Beaming — Beam the file to your handset from your PC using Bluetooth or IR.
  • Install via PC — In PC connectivity suite look for the "Install software" option. You'll need to have the handset connected to the PC via cable, Bluetooth or infrared for this to work.
  • Over the Air — Use an Internet/WAP browser and download a SIS file from our site directly to your handset.
  • By email — E-mail a SIS file to your own email account, and then use your phone to logon to your email and download the SIS file as an attachment.
  • Via memory card — Copy files onto a card from your PC, and then insert the card into your handset. You'll need a file manager to access the file from the memory card.

Once the SIS file is on the phone, you can run it e.g. from the Inbox or via suitable file manager.
You can also use the PC connectivity solution (e.g. PC Suite for Nokia or Sony Ericsson) that was supplied on the CD with your handset.

Help, I am totally new to these things...

Trial

What is shareware?

The term "Shareware" denotes special software marketing that can be characterized as "Try before buy".
One of many definitions of 'Shareware':
Copyrighted software available for downloading on a free, limited trial basis; if you decide to use the software, you're expected to register and pay a small fee. By doing this, you become eligible for assistance and updates from the author.
More about shareware...
Let's summarize the steps you are expected to do:
Read the product description, download, install and test. Only then — if you like the product — go for purchase.

What does it mean a trial version?

The standard way of selling programs is that the user gets a version of the program for testing.
Based on whether the user is satisfied, he can eventually decide for the purchase of the full version.
Resco products offer 2-week trial version that is identical with the full version except it is time-limited.

My trial period elapsed, but I did not have time to do the testing.

We do not have any utility that would "restart the trial". But there might be a solution.
Check, please, if there is a newer version than the one you currently use.

  • If yes, then install it and you get some extra days for testing.
  • If not, send us an email. We might be able to provide at least a beta version for the next release. (which is usually better than the current one.)

Purchase

How do I purchase a program using your website?

Click on the buy link on the selected product page and fill the order. Do not buy prior you tested the product. Our selling engine is powered by Handango. In case of the technical problems with the purchase contact please Handango Customer support.
The alternative retailers (Pocketland.de, Clickgamer.com, Mobihand.com, Mobile2day.de etc.) are listed on the individual product pages. If you prefer, you may realize the purchase by them.
The typical payment is based on the credit card, but the individual retailers may provide other ways.
You can find the "Owner name" in the Today screen on your Pocket PC device.
In case if the field is empty, fill it please with your name or another suitable string (at least 3 letters long!) and press OK.
The same owner name form must be filled when ordering- into resellers ordering form. Only then the proper code can be provided.

How do I purchase a localized version?

Some products offer localized versions (German, French...). Please check for their availability on the product page.
Some localized versions can be downloaded from our web site, the others may be available only at the local reseller. (Look for the section Legal resellers on the product description page.) This depends on the agreement with the translator and there are no general rules.
The rule is that the same unlock codes apply to all versions whether it is English, German, French etc. and it does not matter which version you purchase. (However, we do not guarantee this for the future.)
But even if you have this freedom, we encourage you to support the localization by purchasing the localized versions. This helps the people taking part in the localization and motivates us to continue supporting the language mutations. Thank you.

Is the electronic purchase safe?

Every scheme can be broken the same way as you cannot guarantee that your briefcase won't be stolen.
If you

  • buy at merchants, whom you know and trust, and
  • the connection is secure (you see https in the address bar of your Internet Explorer),

then you are at least as safe as when using your card in the store.

Can I cancel the purchase and get a refund?

Some people buy prior to trying the program and then they can finish e.g. with a Pocket PC program, although they use Symbian. Or maybe they are just disappointed with the product performance.
These are the cases that lead to the refund requests.
Let's explain our role in the purchase process:
The purchase transaction is an agreement between you and the distributor (Handango, Mobihand etc.) and the refund requests have to be addressed to him. For those interested here is the link to the Handango return policy.
We agree with this policy. If you have the feeling that despite all you are right, then contact us and we can offer some alternative solution (such as product replacement).

Registration

I did not get the unlock code.

Although seldom, it really can happen. The automatic registration is a complex process incorporating activities of the distributor, web communication and proper functioning of our servers. What is done can be characterized as "best effort" and it works in the vast majority of cases.
A frequent cause of the failure is that some users, most commonly Hotmail users, have their spam settings too tight which causes our notification mail to be discarded.
What to do in such case:

  • Visit our automatic registration page and request the unlock code there.
  • Send us a reminder and we'll try to react as soon as possible.
Please, attach the order details such as the reseller, order reference number, product name, e-mail address used in the order.

The registration dialog refuses the unlock code.

As the final step of the purchase you should receive an email containing the unlock code.
This code was generated based on the owner name, IMEI - the terminology differs based on the platform) that you wrote into the order form.
The most common problems are:

  • misunderstandings (e.g. some users may type their name instead of the device owner name)
  • typing errors

Please note that the owner name is case sensitive and the internal spaces are important.
Here are the examples of the id's that will produce different unlock codes:

  • James Bond
  • JamesBond
  • jamesbond

etc. (Leading and closing spaces are unimportant.)
When looking for the problem, try to compare letter by letter the owner name with the string that you received in the email notification.
Then send us the corrected owner name and we shall return you the new unlock code.

Windows Mobile: What does it mean owner name?

Resco uses the owner name as the base for the unlock code generation on the Pocket PC based devices.
You can find the "Owner name" in the Today screen on your Pocket PC device.
In case if the field is empty, fill it please with your name or another suitable string and press OK.
The same owner name form must be filled when ordering – into resellers ordering form. Only then the proper code can be provided.

Symbian: What does it mean IMEI code?

As the most of existing shareware applications Resco uses IMEI code for the registration purposes.
The IMEI, short for International Mobile Equipment Identity, is a unique number given to every single mobile phone.
It is not modifiable by the user and a written copy of it can be typically found behind the battery.
To get your IMEI code, please press *#06# on your mobile phone.
Alternatively, the IMEI code is displayed by the product registration dialog.
There are two formats of the IMEI codes at the moment:

  • aabbbb-cc-dddddd-e (old format)
  • xxxxxxxx-dddddd-e (since April 1, 2004)

You can find more information about IMEI codes here.
Resco products accept both formats or this more compressed format:

  • xxxxxxxxdddddde

Issues
You may experience IMEI-related problems with handsets manufactured after April 1, 2004 such as e.g. non-standard length of the IMEI string. Here are some guidelines:

  • When registering your software, use a valid IMEI format. Do not use any other characters except digits and hyphen. You can omit hyphens, but the IMEI code should have 15 digits.
  • If the IMEI code shown in the registration dialog differs from the device IMEI obtained via *#06# then the registration dialog IMEI should be used. (Even if it is longer than 15 digits.)

I lost my unlock code

You can email our support. Don't forget to specify your data.
In the optimal case it should be orderId and/or your mail address. Or you can retrieve your unlock code automatically.

Upgrade

Where should I put the unlock code for an upgrade?

Some users expect that a new registration will be necessary with each upgrade. Although this might be generally the case, we use to suppress the registration screen unless the unlock code changed — this happens usually with major upgrades only.
The only difference between the registered version and the demo is the starting registration dialog. If it is not displayed, then you have a registered version.

Do I need a new unlock code if I upgrade?

We use to change the unlock codes due to the software protection reasons from time to time.
Minor upgrades (e.g. 2.10 > 2.20) usually preserve existing registration and no unlock code is needed. (Exceptions are possible.)
However, for a major upgrade (e.g. 2.40 > 3.10) you can expect that a new unlock code will be needed.
But even in this case you are still entitled to free upgrades within 1-year period: You can retrieve new code automatically or email our support.

Upgrade policy

Resco Games has two different policies towards major and minor upgrades. Being a registered user of Resco Games product you are entitled to a free copy for any minor upgrades of this product and 50% discount for any major upgrades.
A minor upgrade is a release that fixes bugs, improves performance, enhances usability, upgrades data, or adds new features to an existing version. Version numbers look like v2.10, v2.12, v2.50, etc. If your original purchase was for, say, Resco Brain Games 2.0, then you are entitled to all the upgrades for free, but only those, beginning with number "2". Upgrades for the current edition can be downloaded from our web site at no charge.
A major upgrade is a revision that involves extensive engineering work to provide significant enhancements to a product and is often accompanied with significant changes of the user interface, new design and many new useful features. Major upgrades are indicated by a change in the first version number. So an upgrade from 2.x to 3.x is a major upgrade.

I changed my email address (device owner name etc.)

When you change your email address, you cannot use our web automat to pick up the registration code.
The reason is simple: the codes are sent to the mail address, which you registered originally.
Then the only way is to email our support.
