Do I have a Pocket PC, a Palm or a Symbian handset?

A surprising amount of people are not aware of the platform they have. Although this problem is pronounced mainly with the Symbian (where the vast majority of the users is platform-unaware), we have experienced several complaints when the users tried to install a Palm product to a Pocket PC and vice versa or were surprised that .exe installers fail to run on a Mac computer.

If you don't know which platform you have:

  • The instruction manual which you got with your device should tell you if your device is Palm OS, Pocket PC, Symbian UIQ, Symbian Series 60, HPC2000 etc.
  • Or find your platform here.

How can I download a PDF manual?

A simple click on a PDF link opens the manual.

To download the PDF manual instead: Right-click the link and select Save Target As...
To read the manual you will need Adobe Acrobat Reader. If you do not have it, you can download Adobe Acrobat for free here.

Palm PDA

Is the product compatible with my Palm?

Version checking

Palm products require specific version of the operating system. This is typically written in the product description this way:
Requirements: Palm OS 5.0 or higher

To find your Palm OS version open the Info dialog from your system menu and select the Version page.

A simpler test

Install and run. In case that the OS version is incompatible the application will terminate with an alert.

Note that is a fully safe way of compatibility testing. All Palm apps start with the version checking. If it fails, they gracefully terminate and you can uninstall the application.

Other device specifics

All Resco products work on all currently used screen resolutions (incl. HiRes+) and support specific features such as 5way, Jog Dial etc.

The problem might be also on the device side, e.g. well-known Palm OS patch for T3.

Which install package is for me?

Here are the most common types of the install packages. Select the one that is best suited for your desktop computer.

  • .prc file (e.g. RescoViewer.prc) represents the Palm application itself and can be installed on any computer. To do so add the .prc file to the Palm Install Tool (usually using a simple 2click) and Hotsync.
  • Zip archive contains the Palm application itself (.prc file) and other components such as user manual, readme file etc. You need to unpack the archive using utilities such as WinZip, Total Commander etc., add .prc/.pdb files to the Palm Install Tool and Hotsync.Zip can be used on any computer including Mac or Linux systems.
  • .exe files are Windows installers. Run them and they install the needed components to the Palm Install Tool.
The last step is Hotsync (as always).

Note that while Resco provides several installers, some resellers allow to list just one of them. In any case you can find alternative installers on the product web page.

Pocket PC (Windows Mobile)

Is the product compatible with my PDA?

These devices are manufactured by companies such as Dell (Axim), HP (iPaq), Fujitsu-Siemens (Pocket Loox), Accer, Asus (MyPal) a.s.o.

A special group of Windows Mobile devices represent devices with GSM/GPRS support such as Qtek, O2 or HP 6315.

Which install package is for me?

Here are the most common types of the install packages. Select the one that is best suited for your desktop computer.

  • .cab file represents the Windows Mobile application itself and can be installed only on PDA computer.
  • .exe files and Zip archive can be used only on Windows computer.

Note that while Resco provides several installers, some resellers allow to list just one of them. In any case you can find alternative installers on the product web page.

Symbian

Is the product compatible with my handset?

Currently two Symbian platforms are supported: Series60 and UIQ.
It is not possible to install the product to an unsupported device — the installer will refuse it.
If you don't know whether your handset is supported, check these links:

There might be some incompatibility issues with the newest devices. In that case contact please our Symbian support.

How can I install your product onto my handset?

Software for Symbian OS phones is normally supplied using a Symbian installation file (with a .sis extension).
Hence, the first step is to download the SIS file e.g. from our web.

The SIS file contains the components needed to get the product installed and ready to run.
The ways to install a SIS file onto your handset are as follows:

  • Beaming — Beam the file to your handset from your PC using Bluetooth or IR.
  • Install via PC — In PC connectivity suite look for the "Install software" option. You'll need to have the handset connected to the PC via cable, Bluetooth or infrared for this to work.
  • Over the Air — Use an Internet/WAP browser and download a SIS file from our site directly to your handset.
  • By email — E-mail a SIS file to your own email account, and then use your phone to logon to your email and download the SIS file as an attachment.
  • Via memory card — Copy files onto a card from your PC, and then insert the card into your handset. You'll need a file manager to access the file from the memory card.

Once the SIS file is on the phone, you can run it e.g. from the Inbox or via suitable file manager.
You can also use the PC connectivity solution (e.g. PC Suite for Nokia or Sony Ericsson) that was supplied on the CD with your handset.
